Most common insects that are known for destroying wood along the Jersey Shore are Termites, Carpenter Ants, Powderpost Beetles & Wood Borers, and Carpenter Bees.

TERMITES:

Termites -2Termites are a delicate insect that construct their colonies in wood. They consume cellulose, which is the fiber in the wood, and generally remain infested in the wood. Mud tubes are constructed by the termites as their shelter and these indicate an infestation. Termites are extremely damaging insects as they damage the wood from the inside out.

CARPENTER ANTS:

Carpenter Ant_-_5Carpenter Ants are among the larger species of Ant. They are black or reddish-black in color and nest in moist wood, not only outside but also in buildings and structures. Carpenter Ants forage for proteins and sugars to eat, they DO NOT EAT WOOD! Damage is caused by the ants creating tunnels through the wood and can be quite severe if left untreated.

POWDERPOST BEETLES & WOOD BORERS:

Powderpost feed on wood, damaging it and detracting from its appearance. Adults emerging from the wood leave small, circular exit holes (2-3 mm diameter), while larvae tunnel beneath the wood surface, converting solid wood into powder. In many cases, the holes can become so numerous that the damage looks like it was created by a shotgun blast. Most Powderpost and related beetles do not normally cause structural damage in a short period of time, but they can quickly destroy smaller items like picture frames and tool handles.

CARPENTER BEES:

Wood boring_carpenter_bee_isolated_on_a_white_backgroundThe common eastern carpenter bee, Xylocopa virginica, is the carpenter bee most often encountered in the eastern United States. It is often mistaken for a large bumblebee species, as they are similar in size and coloring. They bore holes in wood dwellings and can become minor pests. They use chewed wood bits to form partitions between the cells in the nest.
